STUDY FINDS THAT HEALTHCARE FUELS ECONOMY
You know how the famous commercial goes
Healthcare is an economic force in the Central Florida community according to a study released recently, during a joint meeting with the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission and the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce. The Financial Analysis and Community Impact Assessment of Florida Hospital showed that healthcare is one of the area’s driving economic forces – with Florida Hospital contributing $2.053 billion to the economy of Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties in 2002.
"This is truly an eye-opening study," said Jacob Stuart, President, Orlando Chamber of Commerce." This just shows what an economic powerhouse the healthcare industry is in our area. As a community, we are fortunate that Florida Hospital would allocate the time and financial resources to conduct this study."
The study analyzed the impact of Florida Hospital’s seven campuses and 13 Centra Care Walk-in Centers on their local communities- as an employer, healthcare provider, and community leader. Researchers in the Department of Health Professions at the University of Central Florida Department conducted the study, using 2002 hospital and community data.
"The purpose of this survey was to assess the importance of healthcare as an economic driver in the nation and the region," stated Aaron Liberman, Timothy Rotarius and Antonio Trujillo, University of Central Florida Researchers. "This study has shown that as local leaders work to diversify the regional economy, healthcare can be one of the strongest elements to make that happen."
Some highlights from the study include:
Florida Hospital contributes $1.14 billion to the community as an employer to more than 14,000 people.
As a healthcare provider, Florida Hospital treats 900,000 patients each year. Florida Hospital contributes more than $893,000 to the community. And, Florida Hospital is the largest Medicare provider in the nation, and has more admissions than any other hospital in America.
As a community leader, Florida Hospital and its employees make an annual contribution to the community of $11.7 million as supporters of worthy causes among more than 465 organizations. An additional $300,000 worth of office space is also donated to various community organizations.
